" We do everything possible to make sure we do right by you, our client, no matter what. We deploy, develop, and build the best possible solutions for your needs. Hostwinds has no middlemen. We own our work and our promises "

Source : Hostwinds

In 2010, a man called "Peter" founded Hostwinds.

Having a rich experience and a background in development, Peter; knew how a hosting company should perform.

The company is headquartered in the great pacific northwest (Seattle), to be exact.

A large portion of those who purchase a hosting plan from any hosting service provider -which Hostwinds is one of the best in the field– tend to host their websites, and the majority of those websites are on WordPress.

It is why I am writing this article.

Installing WordPress on Hostwinds can cause headaches, but not if you do it correctly.

There are a couple of ways to install WordPress on Hostwind.

1- We can install WordPress on Hostwind via the CentOS web panel.

Before we jump straight in to install WordPress on Hostwinds, make sure :

  • 1- You've installed your CentOS Web panel.
  • 2- You've set the user.
  • 3- You've set up desired domain DNS Records in Claud DNS Manager or CentOs Web Panel
  • 4-You can also configure CentOS Web Panel to Manage DNS

If you have not done it yet, follow the steps below:

Installing CentOS Web Panel:

Side note :

Take a snapshot backup of your server before you make any changes.

Now! with that out of the way, let's head over to your server and get access via ssh. ( you can use PuTTY to get access to your server remotely).

Once there, you will see the green text if the server is still installing your CentOS Web Panel. Otherwise, you'll see the CentOS Web Panel welcome message similar to the image shown below.

CentOS_Web _Panel_welcome message_

Now! we shall proceed to the CentOS Web Panel setup.

  • Setting up CentOS Web Panel
  • 1 – Navigate to the CentOS Web panel login page on your browser. This URL will be your server's IP Address and will access port 2030. It will look like this: "`http://192.168.101.13:2030″`.

Eventually, we will be able to use an associated domain name instead of the IP Address, but for this guide, this will suffice for now. The CentOS Web Panel page will display as shown in the image below.

  • 2 -Finally, log in to your Admin panel with the credentials sent to you by email when you first created the VPS. (Root & password). Once there, you'll see the CentOS Web Panel dashboard shown in the image below.

Creating Users in Web Panel

Login to your CWP7 dashboard. (by default, you do it by navigating to the IP address of your server and affixing '2030' at the end).

It will look similar to this :

192.168.1.183:2030.

  • Once in your dashboard, click on the user accounts.
  • then click on create new
  • Finally, start filling in the credentials to create a new user.

Before we move on with installing WordPress on Hostwinds, set all the options below:

  1. Domain Name:this should be your primary domain name associated with this user account. To use it as a resolvable domain, you must register it on you. Otherwise, have control over the names server setting at the registrar of that domain.
  2. Username:This should be the user name associated with your primary domain name on this account you're creating here.Side note: " you could choose a username that matches your domain. ex:- Phtographicscene.com will have: Photographicscene  as a username "
  3. Password:Practically, choose a password for this account. The server-user will be assigned the same password. Keep in mind that this one should be stronger because it will be public-facing.
  4. Admin email: This will be the default email address for the server-user to receive notifications.
  5. Server IPs:This is where you assign an IP address for the user's account and domain.
  6. Packages: You can assign the user a specific server hosting package with this dropdown. You are always able to manage the packages available to cater to particular needs. The default package is 0k for most cases, but you may find that you will need additional changes.
  7. Inodes:You can assign inode limits here if; you want to have a different limit than the default package.
  8. Process Limit: You can assign the maximum number of Linux or PHP processes that the user can run here. Generally, The default number listed here should be sufficient for most average website installations running on a single domain. You can modify this number to be superior if your user runs into resource allocation issues.
  9. Open Files:You can limit the total number of files opened that the user account can have open at any given time. Typically, this limit should be ok at its default, but you can increase it if the user runs into resource allocation issues.
  10. Additional options:The options here provide extra features or restrictions to the user account. A backup user account allows the server backup script to back up this account. Shell Access allows the user account to run scripts as a Linux user on the server. (Advice:) keep this disabled unless there is an excellent reason to spare it. AutoSSL is a feature; that lets CentOS Web Panel automatically apply SSL Certificates to the domains associated with this user account. You can set up the source of those SSL Certificates within the Security section of the CentOS Web Panel.
  11. Create a button:Click on the button shown below; to confirm all details entered in the above boxes and create the user account.
*You have now created a user account. You can log in to the "User Web Panel" by changing the port on the server URL or IP address to 2082 and entering the credentials created here. We can start installing WordPress on Hostwinds.

  • If you only want WordPress on a particular directory, put that here. For example /blog – WordPress will be installed in yourdomain.com/blog but, make sure the directory does not already exist.
  • Leave the database name that it assigns unless you're comfortable with databases and have already set one up that you want to use
  • Don't use admin for your username to log in for security.
  • Generate a strong admin password and store this in a safe place
  • Enable the installation of the Limit Login Attempts plugin
  • By default, your installation of WordPress will upgrade automatically
  • You may also choose to auto upgrade themes and features, although not enabled by default in the Advanced Options section.
